Julian W. Scheer

Julian Weisel Scheer was born in Richmond, Va., and wrote for the local. During World War II he served in the merchant marine in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Robert F. Kennedy asked Scheer in 1962 to create a framework for NASA's public relations. He joined NASA as consultant in November 1962. NASA Administrator James E. Webb announced appointment of Julian Scheer as Deputy Assistant Administrator for Public Affairs on February 3rd 1963. Scheer had been serving as consultant to NASA Assistant Administrator for Public Affairs George L. Simpson and directed NASA public affairs activities beginning in November 1963. Scheer was instrumental in the overall press relations for NASA throughout the era of the Apollo moon landings before resigning in February 1971. Mr Scheer suffered a heart attack and passed away at his home in Carlett Virginia in September 2001.
