Andriyan Grigor’yevich Nikolayev; Major General, Red Air Force; born September 5, 1929, Shorshely, Chuvash Autonomous Republic; married (to cosmonaut Valentina Vladimorovna Tereshkova), two children. Graduated as a pilot from an Air Force school (1954), became a cosmonaut in 1960, and graduated from Zhukovskiy Air Force Engineering Academy (1968). He was backup pilot for Vostok 2, pilot of Vostok 3, backup commander for Soyuz 6, Soyuz 7, and Soyuz 8, commander of Soyuz 9.
