NASA's M2-F3 lifting body, piloted by William H. Dana, completed 18th flight after air-launch from B-52 aircraft over Flight Research Center. Objectives-to expand flight envelope, obtain stability and control data at mach 0.95, and check out pitch reaction control- were achieved. M2-F3 reached 21000-m (68 000-ft) altitude and exceeded planned mach 1.34 speed. (NASA proj off)

Dept. of Defense announced that two squadrons of F-111A fighter- bomber aircraft were being sent to Southeast Asia for first time in 41/2 yrs. Aircraft, with low-level terrain-following radars, would replace four squadrons of F-4 Phantom fighter-bombers to increase U.S. all-weather and low-altitude capabilities during monsoon season in Vietnam war.
