The rapid approach of the Martian winter, whose temperatures would fall below -123°C, had halted science experiments using the Viking 2 lander, NASA announced. Problems with the lander's sample arm had forced controllers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to cancel a final biology experiment. The meteorology station and the seismic instrument would use power to gather data during the winter; all other power would go toward maintaining survivable heat levels inside the lander.
