NASA launched the Indian Department of Space payload INSAT-IA from ESMC at 1:48 a.m. EST on a Delta into an orbit with 35,985-kilometer apogee, 166-kilometer perigee, and 28.4 ° inclination. An apogee boost motor fired April 11 and 12 put Insat 1 into synchronous orbit at 74 °E over the equator. Attempts to release the C-band (uplink) antenna were unsuccessful; ground control deployed it by blasting it with the reaction-control jets. The S-band (downlink) antenna deployed without difficulty, but the solar sail would not release as planned.
