NASA said that Landsat 4, launched July 16, was "in excellent condition" and ready for a week's orbit-adjustment maneuvers. The multispectral scanner, one of its two sensor systems, was turned on July 19; the first image had been processed at GSFC, results indicating "flawless operation of the instrument and spacecraft systems" Transmission of data from the new, more powerful thematic mapper began July 20; images of the area around Detroit should be available in a week.
