NASA got back tapes from IBM that were recovered from the Atlantic Ocean six weeks after the Space Shuttle accident and revealed that the Challenger crew had no knowledge of events leading to the catastrophe. IBM engineers, who were simultaneously researching tape restoration, were called upon and after isolating the computer zeros and ones, NASA engineers began the job of translating the data into a facsimile of human voice.
