Following a routine star calibration, the Magellan spacecraft, which had completed 15 months of service and 3,880 orbits of successfully mapping over 95 percent of the surface of Venus, appeared to have suffered a component failure in one of its two downlink transmitters, temporarily halting the reception of mapping data with its high-resolution radar.
