Princeton University graduate student Xiaohui Fan discovered a distant quasar that scientists believed to be the oldest object ever observed by a human being. Fan had worked as part of a team using the 32-foot (10-meter) W. M. Keck Telescope. Estimating that the quasar was 12 billion years old, astronomers expressed their excitement that the benchmark discovery would enable them to observe the universe in its formative stages.
