Samuel Tolver Preston a British engineer writes a letter to "Engineering" magazine describing how a multiple discharge could be used to overcome the problems of Jules Verne's spacegun concept. By multiple charges the acceleration can be broken down into steps. In this he anticipated the concept of multi-staged rockets.
