The air on board the Space Shuttle and ISS is scrubbed pretty thoroughly by ventilation systems and special air scrubbers. In a confined air space that is heated and re-circulated, things will smell totally different than they might on the ground. So although you can smell normally in space, you might find that certain items you tolerate on the ground are offensive to you in such a confined space.
