STS 51-C was the third Discovery shuttle flight. On board were Thomas Mattingly, Loren Shriver, Ellison Onizuka, James Buchli, and Gary Payton. It was the first shuttle mission dedicated to the Department of Defense. The US Air Force Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) booster was deployed and met mission objectives. A Department of Defense satellite (USA 8) was deployed during this mission. The mission duration was 73 hours 33 minutes 23 seconds.
