The Skylab 2 astronauts' June 7 repair of the Skylab 1 Orbital Workshop's solar wing [see May 14-June 22] had proved "that a manned vehicle outside the earth's atmosphere is not completely helpless when unforeseen contingencies arise," a New York Times editorial said. Skylab's future "now looks brighter than at any time since the initial launch. Valuable information remains to be collected on the reaction of human beings to prolonged stay in space, and on the usefulness of space stations for scientific and industrial activity. A promising start has already been made by this first Skylab crew; now it seems reasonable to expect that major contributions will also be made by the two other crews that are scheduled to occupy and work in Skylab later this year."
