The Explorer 51 Atmosphere Explorer, launched by NASA 15 Dec. 1973, had achieved its prelaunch objective of investigating the photo-chemical processes accompanying the absorption of solar radiation in the earth's atmosphere and was adjudged successful. All 14 onboard scientific instruments were acquiring worthwhile data and, except for minor problems, all spacecraft systems were performing normally. The onboard propulsion system had been used on numerous occasions for perigee altitude adjustment and apogee altitude restoration. The lowest perigee excursion into the lower thermosphere to date had been to an altitude of 130 km. (NASA MOR, 6 Aug 74)
