Tass announced that the USSR had launched a Molniya 3 comsat carrying relay apparatus to operate in the centimeter waveband, into an orbit with 40 631km apogee in the northern hemisphere and 661km perigee in the southern hemisphere, period of 12hr 16min, and 62.8° inclination. The satellite would ensure operation of a long-distance telephone, telegraph, and radio-communications system, and program relay from USSR central television to points in the Orbita network.
