ESA reported that the first qualification test of its Ariane launcher first stage had been "satisfactory" May 17 with further tests scheduled for early autumn. The 139-second duration (nominal operating time) had tested the resistance of nozzle-throat linings, which had been modified, and propellant depletion. The second stage had completed tests that began last October; the third stage was currently undergoing tests. (ESA/ONES Release No. 17)
