The cause of the faulty engine valve that was responsible for Shuttle Columbia's sixth delay was discovered to be a 5-inch thermometer that was broken during fuel loading. After engineers removed the thermometer, they were hopeful for a launch later in the day, but feared that overcast weather might cause yet another delay.
