The Soviet Union launched a 20-ton, self-contained astrophysical observatory whose mission was to dock with the orbiting Mir Space Station. Viktor Blagov, the deputy mission director, said that the observatory would "open a new chapter" in human space flight and would become a key building block of a permanently habitable scientific space complex. When docked with the Mir Space Station, the 19-foot-long observatory, with a 13.6 foot diameter, would double the working space available and would create a sort of a "high rise" structure in space.
