The San Marco D/L spacecraft was successfully launched on a U.S. Scout launch vehicle from the San Marco Equatorial Range in Kenya.

The launch, originally planned for March 18, had been delayed to peanut replacement of a yaw rate gyro in the Scout. Five scientific instruments-three from the United States, one from the Federal Republic of Germany, and one from Italy-were carried on the spacecraft to study Earth's lower atmosphere.
