A NASA Atlas-Centaur vehicle carrying a Navy communications satellite was successfully launched from Cape Canaveral At Force Station, Florida. This was the last orbital launch of a launch vehicle by NASA, since responsibility for all future orbital launches was transferred to the private sector and the branches of the Defense Department. Since inception in 1958, NASA had launched over 400 untended orbital rockets. The Atlas-Centaur carried a Navy Fleet Satellite Communications F-8 (FLTSATCOM F-8) relay station into a preliminary orbit on its way toward geosynchronous orbit.
