NASA released a photograph from the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) of the vast dust clouds that fill the Milky Way galaxy. Launched almost one year previously, the COBE was to study background radiation from the Big Bang believed to have created the universe. It found that the fireball was unexpectedly smooth, belying numerous theories. (W Post, Oct 18/90; NY Times, Oct 23/90; NASA Release 90-140)
