NASA's Office of Safety and Mission Assurance, in conjunction with NASA's Inventions and Contributions Board, created the Software of the Year Award to recognize such technology used by NASA. (NASA Release 94-22)

NASA announced that results of joint NASA-industry research experiments to reduce exhaust emissions of future supersonic airliners to environmentally compatible levels substantially exceeded program goals. Using an engine fuel combustion chamber sector, NASA surpassed its goal of generating no more than 5 grams of oxides of nitrogen per kilogram of fuel burned at supersonic flight speed. NASA announced that Shuttle Columbia was scheduled to take off in March on a two-week mission to conduct various experiments entailing such areas as materials processing, biotechnology, microgravity, medical concerns, and environmental monitoring. (NASA Release 94-25)
