Former CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite was quoted as saying that in view of the lack of a guarantee that money saved from the space program would be used for urgent needs such as health, housing, education, and crime, the United States could not afford not to continue going into outer space. NASA's Office of Advanced Concepts and Technology announced the selection of six research proposals for contracts under Phase I of the Small Business Technology Transfer Program. This phase allows contracts valued at up to $100,000 with 12 months to complete. (NASA Release 94-99)
