Without holding any subcommittee hearings on the matter, the U.S. House Committee on Science and Technology voted to trim NASA's budget for 1997 by US$450 million. NASA operated under a US$13.8 billion budget in 1996. Most of the cuts were from the budget of the initiative Mission to Planet Earth.
