Because of delays in launching Shuttle Atlantis, astronaut Shannon W. Lucid broke Elena V. Kondakova's record for longest single flight in space by a woman. NASA engineers had delayed the launch because they suspected that the O-rings on the Solid Rocket Boosters were faulty and wanted to replace them. During Lucid's stay in space aboard Mir, she and the two Russian cosmonauts had conducted a variety of scientific experiments.
