Scientists studying images obtained by NASA's Mars Global Surveyor published two reports in the journal Nature about Martian volcanic activity. One study reported that the images contained evidence that "ten times more lava" than previously thought had erupted onto Mars's surface. The other study suggested that at least one of Mars's volcanoes was still active.
