[edit] Abstract

Electrical discharges will occur if voltage builds up in the Martian atmosphere beyond the Paschen breakdown minimum. Electrical potentials are expected to build up due to triboelectric and photoelectric charging, followed by charge separation by atmospheric motion. This could occur either naturally, by dust or sandstorm activity, or by motion of astronauts or rovers over the surface.
