Abstract

In both programmes, cost reduction of the space segment, but without significantly increasing risk, has been a driving factor in order to make the mission attractive to payload sponsors. A number of strategies have been employed to achieve a "low-cost" mission and this paper provides an overview of these, together with an assessment of their success and the way in which future missions might build on these ideas. The basic design of the spacecraft is also described.
