Abstract
In the period which followed the fall of the Soviet Union, the Russian military space programme contracted sharply. Close analysis of the programme reveals that some sub-programmes were concluded and others replaced. Russia continued to give a priority to photoreconnaissance, electronic surveillance, early warning and some other low-profile programmes. A new photoreconnaissance series was introduced (Orlets-2) and Russia continued to operate a modest military space programme in mid-2001.
