[edit] Abstract
Improving solar cells performance in space through down-conversion of high-energy photons into photons of lower energy is proposed in this paper. Two configurations are shortly analyzed by using a simple detailed balance model: cell and rear converter (C-RC) and front converter and cell (FC-C), respectively. Using a C-RC system does not increase significantly the performance, as compared to that of a solar cell operating alone. The photovoltaic efficiency increases with more than ten percent by adding a front down-converter to the solar cell. The down-conversion technique provides better results in space rather than on the Earth surface.
