Born in 1976, in Tokyo, Japan. Not married. Enjoys practicing Japanese traditional martial arts (Aikido and Iaido).

Graduated from Toho High School, Chiba, Japan, in 1995. Graduated from National Defense Medical college in 2002.

[edit] Experience

Kanai worked for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) as a diving medical officer. From 2002 to 2004, he had a 2-year internship at the JSDF Central Hospital and the National Defense Medical College Hospital, which included internal medicine (family medicine), general surgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine and psychiatry. In 2004, he was assigned to the JSDF Ohminato Hospital, Aomori, Japan. He completed the JMSDF Diving Medicine Course at the Undersea Medical Center, Kanagawa, Japan, in 2004. He also completed the U.S. Navy Diving Medical Officer's Course as an international military student at the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center, Florida, in 2006. From 2006 to 2008, he worked in the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the National Defense Medical College Hospital and finished a 2-year residency as a general surgeon. In 2008, he worked at the JSDF Hospital Kure, Hiroshima, Japan. In June 2009, he was transferred to the Medical Unit at the JMSDF First Service School, which includes JMSDF Diving School and Maritime Officer's Candidate School. In September 2009, he was selected as a Japanese Astronaut Candidate and joined Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

[edit] Spaceflight Experience

NASA EXPERIENCE: Kanai arrived at the Johnson Space Center in September 2009 as one of the 14 members of the 20th NASA astronaut class. He recently graduated from Astronaut Candidate Training, which included scientific and technical briefings, intensive instruction in ISS systems, Extravehicular Activity (EVA), robotics, physiological training, T-38 flight training and water and wilderness survival training.
