Marc Maurer, Ph. D.

Born in Iowa in 1951, Marc Maurer has been blind all his life, and says that the greatest influence in his life other than family and religion is the spirit of the National Federation of the Blind (NFB). At eighteen he learned that blindness would not be a tremendous handicap if he approached it with the right spirit of determination. A year's training under the President of the NFB, Dr. Kenneth Jernigan, made Maurer ready for college. With the assistance of the NFB, he matriculated at the University of Notre Dame, where he graduated with honors, and at the University of Indiana Law School, graduating with a law degree. Maurer's employment has included law practice at a public interest law firm, work in the office of the general counsel at the civil aeronautics board, and operation of his own law practice. He has been President of the National Federation of the Blind since 1986.
