For a long time it is unlikely that people will travel in space on their own. The reason is that it is much safer to travel with a buddy, just as people scuba or mountain climb with partners. In some cases we may use jetpacks, but they will require a lot of energy and can't be used for very long. On the surface of the Moon or Mars, while it may seem boring, we may just walk or ride electrically-powered vehicles.
