Leading lunar scientist Dr. Harold C. Urey told conference on nuclear energy at Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago he was "pleased" at discovery that age of lunar rocks might range between 3 billion and 4.5 billion yrs [see Aug. 23] and had "expected this for a long time. . . . But I'm not making any more bets on the moon's origin." He was "puzzled" by once-molten lunar sea material; it might have been formed by huge meteor or asteroid impacts rather than volcanism and moon might have originated out of cluster of such asteroidal debris. Fiftieth anniversary of International Air Transport Assn. (IATA), founded in Amsterdam Aug. 28, 1919. International flying under IATA auspices in 1919 amounted to 3,500 passengers, in 1969 it was expected to total 300 million. Organization was still devoted to original principles: promotion of safe, regular, and economical air transport; collaboration among international carriers; processing of technical matters and common fares; and functioning as clearinghouse for settlement of member airline accounts.
