The Farthest Shore (electronic edition) - A full Moon as seen from the Earth. The dark areas are low land areas (basins or depressions, historically called mare), whereas the grey areas are elevated regions (highlands, historically called continents). Numerous impacts created a heavily cratered terrain on the Moon’s surface. The small bright spots indicate fresh impacts.
