The Farthest Shore (electronic edition) - The spectrum of blackbody radiation at different absolute temperatures is shown as a function of wavelength. The spectral radiance of the Sun plotted at 5777 K peaks in the visible part of the spectrum, here shown as ranging from wavelengths of 0.4 µm (or 400 nm) to 0.8 µm (800 nm). The Earth-atmosphere sys¬tem behaves as a blackbody with an absolute temperature of just less than 300 K (actually ~ 288 K); the peak of the radiation emitted by the Earth is at wavelengths close to 10 µm.
