Long Duration Space Station
From The Space Library
A study group headed by NASA’s Charles Donlan was conducted in-house from April to August of 1966 at MSFC with assistance from teams at MSC, Langley and the Kennedy Center. The result was the Long Duration Space Station (LDSS). Built from a modified S-IVB it was expected it could have been launched by 1975 and could have housed a crew of from nine to twenty four. It would have been launched on a Saturn V and some consideration was still given to providing artificial gravity in some areas. It was expected to last in orbit for five years with all of the scientific experiments mounted inside before launch. The LDSS would have been integrated on the ground before launch. Donlan’s committee delivered an eight volume report on November 15th 1966.
