NRL transmitted the first voice earth-to-earth messages using the moon as a reflector of radio signals. This was later developed into the Commnnications Moon Relay (CMR) system, which was successfully used in November 1959 when solar disturbances in the ionosphere disrupted conventional high-freqnency circuits between Washington and Hawaii.
