Air Force took action to insure earliest possible initial operational capability with ICBM and IRBM.

First powered flight of Bell X-2 (No. 1) by Lt. Col. Frank K. Everest (USAF), powered by first throttlable rocket engine, the Curtiss Wright XLR25-CW-1, and Mach 0.99 was reached.
