NASA announced the appointment of retired U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Simon P. “Pete” Worden as Director of NASA’s ARC in California. Worden, a research professor of astronomy at the University of Arizona, Tucson, had served as Director and Deputy Director at the U.S. Air Force Space Command and had specialized in advanced satellite and launch concepts. He had also served as second deputy for technology at the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization, where he had received NASA’s Outstanding Leadership Medal for directing the 1994 Clementine lunar probe mission.
