NASA announced that Morton Thiokol Space Division, a NASA contractor, would test fire the first redesigned Space Shuttle solid rocket motor on August 27, 1987. The 126-foot-long, 1.2-mi1lion-pound development motor (DM-8) would be fitted with 250 instruments to measure acceleration, pressure, deflection, thrust, strain, temperature, and electrical properties.
