U.S.S.R. launched two Cosmos satellites from Plesetsk. Cosmos 480 entered orbit with 1202-km (746.9-mi) apogee, 1174- km (729.5-mi) perigee, 109.1-min period, and 82.9° inclination. Cosmos 481 entered orbit with 511-km (317.5-mi) apogee, 269-km (167.2-mi) perigee, 92.3-min period, and 71° inclination and reentered Sept. 2. (GSFC SSR, 3/31/72; 12/31/72; SBD, 3/28/72, 149)
NASA launched first in series of five Nike-Javelin III sounding rockets carrying Naval Research Laboratory cesium cloud experiments from Wallops Station at 5:15 am EsT. Payloads in series would be released at 97-km (60-mi) altitude, producing yellowish clouds visible for several hundred kilometers along East Coast. NRL scientists would make radio propagation, photographic, and geomagnetic observations to determine role of wind motions, magnetohydrodynamic effects, and chemical-thermal processes governing atmosphere.
