March 3-9: Radio signals which scientists speculated possibly could have been from extraterrestrial civilization had been received by Cornell Univ.'s antenna at Arecibo Ionospheric Observatory in Puerto Rico. U.K. astronomers during February had proposed such signals might originate with pulsating neutron stars. Arecibo's Director, Dr. Frank D. Drake, would investigate all possibilities of natural origin. He believed four- to five-month study might determine whether signals came from planet in orbit around another star. Dr. Drake said Arecibo observations had confirmed all signal properties reported by U.K., including regularity and variable intensity of signals. (Sullivan, NYT, 3/10/68, 1)
