NASA is flight testing an aircraft with controlled nose strakes that promises increased maneuverability and agility in air combat situations. The strake project, called Actuated Nose Strakes for Enhanced Rolling (ANSER), consists of two moveable "flipper-like" panels called strakes installed on the upper nose of an F-18 aircraft. The hinged four-feet long, six-inch wide panels will assist the pilot in yawing to the right or left at high angles of attack when conventional rudders lose their effectiveness.
