Astronomers from the National Optical Astronomy Observatories, Tucson, Arizona, announced the discovery of the furthest known star in the Milky Way Galaxy. The star, which is believed to be 160,000 light years from Earth, was accidentally discovered while the astronomers were conducting a survey of the Virgo cluster of galaxies. The discovery was expected to help determine the mass of the Milky Way and other similar galaxies. (NY Times, Dec 14/89; B Sun, Dec 14/89)
