Federal Pay Board, by vote of 8 to 2, approved 8.3% first- year increase in aerospace salaries and increases in second year of three-year contracts, to bring total increases to 12%. Board had rejected 12% first-year increases Jan. 5. Although approved increase would be well over 5.5% guideline established by Pay Board, unions had indicated dissatisfaction, Washington Post later reported. (Rowe, W Post, 1/14/72, Al)
NASA launched Nike-Tomahawk sounding rocket from Andoeya, Norway, carrying Norwegian particles and fields experiment. Rocket and instrumentation performed satisfactorily. (SR list)
Manned Spacecraft Center announced Technicolor Inc. had received one-year $2 346 800, cost-plus-award-fee contract extension for photographic support services. Work would include science photography, still and motion picture laboratory, precision laboratory service for earth resources and lunar photography, and audiovisual support for Public Affairs Office. Atomic scientist Dr. Edward Teller urged legislation to make public Government's scientific findings within year after they were classified. In speech before Florida Presbyterian College in St. Petersburg he said, "I am convinced we must do something about secrecy if democracy can function." (AP, W Post, 1/15/72, All)
