Apollo 16 lunar module (LM) pilot Charles M. Duke, Jr., was admitted to Patrick Air Force Base Hospital for treatment of bacterial pneumonia. Duke's illness was not expected to have serious impact on training preparations for Apollo 16 launch, scheduled for March 17, (msc Release 72-02)
Dr. Hannes O. Alfven, professor of applied physics at Univ. of California at San Diego and winner of 1970 Nobel Prize in physics, was named to receive U.S.S.R.'s 1971 Lomonsov Gold Medal for "outstanding achievements in plasma physics and astrophysics." Award was highest granted by Soviet Academy of Sciences. (UPI, LA Times, 1/5/72)
Completion by U.S.S.R. of world's first fast-breeder nuclear reactor for commercial purposes was announced by Izvestia. Reactor, at Shevchenko on Caspian Sea, would produce 250 000 kw of nuclear power to convert salt water from Caspian Sea into fresh water. (Shabad, NYT, 1/15/72, 11)
