The Delta 3 launch vehicle has a new second stage rocket engine planned for use in 1998. The new engine will be capable of generating 24,000 pounds of thrust. In combination with the larger solid-fueled boosters, the McDonnell Douglas Delta 3 will be able to carry twice the weight of the Delta into an orbit 22,300 miles above the surface of the Earth's equator.
