Alan Hale, Ph.D.
Alan Hale earned a Ph.D. in astronomy from New Mexico State University, and founded and directs the Southwest Institute for Space Research in New Mexico. He has studied planetary systems around other stars, and small bodies in our solar system, specifically comets and near-Earth asteroids. He was a co-discoverer of Comet Hale-Bopp, has confirmed numerous comet discoveries, and been a visual observations recorder for the International Halley Watch. He wrote Everybody's Comet: A Layman's Guide to Comet Hale-Bopp, published by High-Lonesome Books, several research papers and popular astronomical articles, writes a newspaper column on astronomy and space entitled "In Our Skies" and hosts a weekly radio program entitled The Other Side of the Sky. He is active in "science diplomacy," leading two delegations of American scientists and students to Iran. He is currently developing a project entitled Earthrise to encourage students to form international collaborations for carrying out astronomical activities.
