NASA announced that an experimental balloon launched April 12 at 6:23 p.m. from the National Scientific Balloon Facility in Texas to test a new heavy-lift design had apparently failed at about 10:42 p.m. somewhere over northwestern Louisiana. The balloon measured about 41 million cubic feet and carried an instrumented payload weighing about 5,300 pounds. (Hq PAO anno Apr 16/79)
